Zidane is a theif with a monkey's tale, he can peform deadly attacks when he is in trance.

Vivi is a black mage who can power up Steiner's sword with magic and make magical sword attacks.

Steiner is a knight of pluto (He's the captain), Zidane calls him Rusty.

Garnet is a princess

Quina is a "Qu" sort of an alien like species with no specific gender who can eat his/her enemies if they are small or weak enough.

Freya is a dragoon who can leap and attack with her speares.

Amarant is an assassain hired by the queen to kill the princess, but he joins the team later.

Eiko is also a summoner.

FF9 starts off when a merry band of thieves try to kidnap the princess Garnet but she ends up joining them.
