Do you know why they include the news of Sam SweetSam Sweet Trial in the movie THE Cable Guy? How is it related to Chip or the movie?

I don't understand

So Ben Stiller could have a little role in a movie her directed? that's my guess..

I always thought that they included it in the film as a sort of issue running in the background of the story, and kept giving regular updates on it to make it seem really important.

Then, when the verdict was given The cable guy jumped onto the satellite, and ruined it for loads of people.

Also on a slightly deeper note, I think because it is Ben Stiller that put himself on trail as Sam Sweet, this acts as a metaphor of how the director is being judged, by the pubic for his direction of The Cable Guy. The fact that we don't see the verdict is because we're each given the oppotunity to make up our own minds about whether he, (this time Stiller), has made a good film or not. The Sam Sweet trail is itself kinda a red herring if you like, it's there to show us that everything is judged in the eye of the media these days, and how the media can be manipulated so that the public hear a distorted version of the true, sometimes so distorted that we don't really find out what the truth was, hense the clip in the film of the phone call conversation, which is a blatant message by Jim Carrey's character Chip. The fact is we don't really care what the verdict of the Sam Sweet is at then end of the film, we aren't given enough empathy with the character, which is definately a deliberate thing, to feel let down that we are never told.

In simple deconstruction, yes, the Sam Sweet trail is just a subplot, but it works on so many other levels, as does the overall film itself, alot more than I've mentioned. It's one of the reasons I love The Cable Guy so much, and can watch it over and over again...erm, I think I'll stop now.

Fangz

Wow, I never thought of "The Cable Guy" in that way. That's really cool, Fangz. I've never actually thought of movies so deeply until this year. Things are still so complicated though. I first heard of "The Cable Guy" from my friend, Jessie. She loved that movie and saw it over and over again because of the extremely hilarious scenes, such as knocking on the door and especially the medieval restaurant scene.

"Buuuuuuuuuuuaaarraaaaahhhhhhhh!!" cracks me up everytime. I really liked this movie because it's one of Jim's darker films. Dark.... is cool.

Actually Fangz, even though your explanation was really cool I think you went a little too deep.

The Sam Sweet trial is there to act as a critic of infotainment, to show that the news in the US are turned into a show and dramatise everything (remember: in the film there's even a movie with Eric Roberts based on the trial). Ben Stiller criticises cable TV and infotainment and shows that it has become a sort of brainwash: Chip Douglas is the product of that.

Since Chip had no father or mother to really take care of him, the TV became his family, that's why everything is a movie to him ("Oh Billy!", "There's no danger music!", it's like in that movie Goldeneye!"...)

At the end, Chip says "somebody has to kill the babysitter", he knows that he has been brainwashed by cable all his life and wants to prevent everyone from becoming crazy like him!

The fact that people don't get to see the verdict at the end shows that, even though they all were dying to know the verdict, it's no big deal, it's just TV.

And now, I'm gonna have a drink of water coz I am dying....

I always thought they were parodying the Menendez Bros. Trial which was on TV non-stop during the time they filmed Cable Guy. It was a trial about two Beverly Hills rich kids who actually killed their parents so they could inherit the fortune. Every time Lyle got on the stand he cried like a baby, Ben even dressed like them. I could be wrong though....
