Carrey’s stories bring down the house

Postby jimliker » Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:27 pm

Jim Carrey, Tina Fey, Laird Hamilton and six other storytellers entertained the capacity crowd with anecdotes under the theme of, “If you could do it all over again . . . what would you do?” on Friday night at the Sconset Casino for the Nantucket Film Festival’s Latenight Storytelling Event .

Carrey’s story, though, may have been the highlight of the night. He began by saying Nantucket is a beautiful place and that he was struck by all the Native American names he encountered and was impressed with the respect and tribute to the former inhabitants of the island.

He then impersonated an old, wise Native American, talked in a low, throaty voice and pretended to dance around a fire and made gestures and movements and flapped his arms.

His real story though, as he described, was a personal story, a coming-of-age story.

“I was 11 or 12 and I began feeling things happening inside of me. I noticed an urge. I became in contact with myself and my sexual urges,” Carrey described. “I brought myself to happy joyness.”

He proceeded to recount in hilarious and ribald detail his adolescent urges, culminating in an experience with a lime-green carpet.

To conclude his coming of age story, Carrey exclaimed, “If I had to do it all over again . . . I’d go shag baby.”

Honouring Charlie Kaufman-Jim praised Charlies screenwriting abilities a the festival-

“A lot of people have written about the hyper-originality of Charlie’s work, and his scripts are sometimes desrcibed as a direct transmission from an alternate reality, but they also connect on a very human level, a basic level,” said Carrey, who starred opposite Kate Winslet in “Eternal Sunshine.”

“He believes what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men. This is one of Charlie’s many gifts. He believes in himself, he trusts his own heart, his own mind and his own truth. If any of his films looks anything at all similar to anything else that’s already been done, it’s because of someone like me, with way too much power, comes along and screwed it up,” Carrey continued.

“At heart, Charlie’s stories are about what happens when ordinary people find themselves in extraordinary situations, and the simple truths that are revealed by the strobelight of real life, not surreality,” he said.

“Actors love Charlie Kaufman – we love you man – because you write roles that challenge us to let go of the hand-holds. You swing without a net, you dive down deep into the land somewhere in that murky depth with blind fish, and it’s just special, it’s just so real, so from another planet. I want to go to your planet sometime Charlie, not for a long time, maybe just for dinner.”

Postby Canadian Jayne » Wed Nov 07, 2007 7:15 pm

thinking for Marilyn's costume but thought, no a little too much, so I went with a pink dress, still have the green silky though, maybe I should post a pic of it and you can decide for the Furry or the Silky, maybe take a poll.
