Oh NO!

No way, I may make the same mistakes if I had them erased. We sometimes still make the same mistakes when they are still there, but at least we can look back and evaluate what we did wrong and try to correct it.
Also bad memories keep us out of danger! We stay away from the place we were before and we surround ourselves with those who also know where we've been or were there too, together you conquour!
On the other hand what if they erased stuff you didn't want to be erased by accident, the happy things, the good memories, the fun stuff that would be disastrous.
And how would you get those memories back if you didn't remember them.
Unless you wrote time in a JOURNAL

What if a memory was REALLY REALLY painful???

Postby unquirked » Tue Apr 13, 2004 8:02 pm

I have some mindlessly stupid mistakes in my past, but nothing that I cannot live with the memories of...also, others find great enjoyment in reminding me of these things, so I wouldn't want to deprive them of their joy.

What if a memory was SO painful, that the inadvertant recall made you nearly mentally ill?

What if it was one little thing and it could be completely erased, rendering you functional again?

I'm playing devil's advocate here ...I don't think I'd take the risk, I'm sweating my upcoming LASIK.

I don't think a journal would fill in all the gaps. My mom keeps one. Sometimes when she'll tell me this great nugget of new wisdom or a new plan I'll remind her that we discussed it. She gets her journal and sees that we discussed it. But we still discuss it again!

Warm fuzzies

Postby Canadian Jayne » Thu Apr 15, 2004 12:30 pm

Physically painfull memories, some people think they are.
Everytime my Ex would come up to see the kids, I would get really bad stomach aches and could hardly move.
Like a real tight knot that won't undo. It took many years for it to go away.
No, a journal doesn't fill the gaps but sometimes it
triggers memories. When one of my kids birthday's
come around I get out my journal and go back to
the day they were born, I read it, and of course we
get our warm fuzzies and laugh and it brings back
what a good day it was. And almost every year we do
this even though we've done it before, like a tradition.
Its so neat when life and memories are fun!

Why does it always seem somehow....

Postby unquirked » Fri Apr 16, 2004 12:29 am

...that BAD memories are more powerful.

Are we programmed, on a molecular level, to feel negatives more acutely than positives?

Or is it just me?

Perhaps it's the nature of my job (think the one of the most pressurized positions that's not uncommon...constant exposure to extremes of human behavior), but it seems to me that I spend most of my time squelching annoyance than feeling real joy.

Geez, that was deep. I think I need a job change.

In a rather freakish coincidence.....

*cue Twilight Zone music*

MSN has a story on its "first page thingy you see when you go to MSN" (please excuse my technical lingo, I'm a computer savant)...It's called "What If you could Erase Memory"...click and it says, "Forgetting Something We Wish We Could..."

..it's in conjunction with WebMD and says that they are exploring this in the context of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I have post traumatic stress disorder from reading it. ZAPPED

Postby Canadian Jayne » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:04 pm

Consider yourself ZAPPED! *sound effect-"CHA-CHING"
Your blonde ANGEL has just proclaimed:

"You, must be positive, and positive things will happen to you" *sound effect -MTQ - Alleluia!*

I recently started a new job and I watch the people when they leave on the morning shift at 7:00 a.m. I see if they are happy or not, now if you have worked all night and you're still smiling I think it must be pretty a GOOD place to work. I think if you still feel somewhat jovial after work, you're OK, but if you are worn and drained and cranky maybe your telling yourself something PTSD is setting in.

You think it means the job is good if they're smiling....

I'd be worried I'd have something erased and then not embarras myself by not knowing it!
I do have a load of memories of times where I've made a total fool of myself that get me red in the face just thinking about it though, I could do without a few of those! I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that remembers them anyway. But, no. I wouldn't risk it. I'd worry that something would go wrong and I'd forget everything, or something like that.
On the other hand, if you take the veiw that we are who we are as a result of our memories, which I'm not sure about, I think it's more than that, erasing some could make us into better people. I still wouldn't do it though, I kinda like who I am.

Smiling!

Postby Canadian Jayne » Sun May 02, 2004 1:32 am

Yes,they probably are happy to be leaving, but in general I've been working there for almost 2 months and I think part of it is there is always a new joke posted for the day, they have a great cafeteria, I notice when people are well fed, they are generally happy. But I also worked at another place(at the same time) different kind of job but the feeling was very pressured and not jovial, big difference. The theory was if you were'nt in pain after finishing, you didn't work hard enough.
