Even tho I'm a huge Jim fan and a huge Tom fan and I was in the movie and I love all of Jim's movies regardless, I don't think Bruce Almighty really was as funny as people made it out to be, I think it built more on the story rather than the hilarity of it, because the parts that people roared at I just sat there and chuckled a bit. When I was at the Eternal Sunshine screening, people were laughing at parts that weren't even meant to be hilariously funny, like when Kate said he was nuts and he said it's been suggested, the whole theater roared in laughter and I wanted to slap each and every one of them, I think the public just makes Jim's movies funnier than they really are, but at least there are people out there who don't look at the man Jim Carrey but look at the quality of the movie and can see past Jim's goofy faces and see what the real story is about, the people that nominate and vote for these movies. Jim should have won because I want him to win, but his movie wasn't really all that funny, there were funny parts but it wasn't one laugh right after the other. Am I making sense?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
J.T. Popularity

Postby grinchy steve » Wed Jun 09, 2004 5:36 am

Bruce Almighty indeed wasn't a minute-after-minute-hilarious thing, but also wasn't The Grinch or Me myself & Irene. Althoug Carrey is growing and growing, the "problem" with MTV is that it's all about populairity.

And when you think about it, after Liar Liar (when his popularity was outreageous) he did a drama and again, a drama. 'The Truman Show' was a great movie the critics said. In america Critics are a big thing. But here in Belgium (by example) the critics aren't important, people don't care about them. And so The Truman Show did it allright, but not really really great. Then there was Man on the Moon, the movie was a huge flop overhere and dissapeared after the first week. Then there was Me, myself & Irene. So after two years being away from pure comedy, it was like Jim Carrey did nothing in between. And also a lot of people didn't think it was hilarious, but just allright. Althought I think it was his best comedic performance ever, the story laks. I don't know how it was in America, but overall, the Grinch was promoted as a kids movie (logical) and overhere Jim Carrey ain't THAT hot to make a lot of adults go see that. Also, people in Europe didn't know who The Grinch was. Then there was The Majestic. Again, it was even a bigger flop at the box office then Man on the Moon. Also didn't made it to his second week. So again, to people here it seemed that Carrey was a long time away.

With Bruce Almighty coming up, the whole theatre went wild when they saw the trailer. Like, "Hey, that's Jim Carrey, the guy from Liar Liar and Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber!" Nobody was talking about recent films. That proofs that his popularity went a bit down a few years outside america. But with Bruce it all came back, it was, togheter with Pirates of the carribean the greatest hit of the summer and nr 3 of the whole year. And so, the only people that brought us comedy before Bruce where Ben Stiller en peope like Jack Black, who aren't really populair overhere and a lot of movies without big stars.

People thougt Bruce was hilarious but was a bit boring at the end. And ofcourse, everyone expected Ace Ventura or something like that. And then you have someone like Johnny Depp, who really won populairity all over the world with that sparrow character. Togeter with Bruce the hype was huge. But Pirates was a blast (althought imo it was toooo long and predictable), a visual blast with a lot of hot names.

I think the problem with Jim Carrey's popularity (MTV is about popularity) is the fact that he is trying a lot of different things. And with all that different movies he doesn't attract the same audience. People that just want to see him in a funny way (which are a LOT), didn't saw him that often. That's the problem.

But there's good news also Moviepeople overhere (like cinefeels -is that right?-) all agree Jim Carrey is a great comedic AND serious actor and DO watch all his movies. In fact, here in Europe, the alternative movies more and more have a much bigger audience then in America. That's because, alternative movies usualy aren't from america. And everyone I know is looking forward to Eternal Sunshine. But we (belgium) have to wait till november )

Bruce Almighty wasn't anything near hilarious to me, I just had a few small chuckles here and there, it seemed like every joke Jim made was forced like he was trying to be funny but wasn't. Sure it made a mega load of money but I don't understand why people find the movie so darn funny, maybe I'm a critic

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
J.T. Personaly I also didn't think it was hilarious, but then i again, it was just funny. The movie had it's charm. Also, when you put the movie against all the other comedies that came out that year AND the year before I was glad I saw somthing that fresh.

No teenage comedy like American Pie, no (or at least, not that much) romantic comedy, just a big comedic star in a movie that wasn't about sexjokes and wasn't about getting a lady. I really, really missed that.

And also, even if I wouldn't like Jim, I had to agree that he' still one of the biggest comedic talents out there. Why? Well, all the other comedies I saw, the main character could be replaced easy by someone else. With Jim it's different, he makes the movie his own with that personal touch he gives at every thing.

but that's just my thought. (and hey, i'm a critic )
