I loved Gene in the musical version, but the Johnny Depp version was more accurate to the book (which I loved) so I'm voting JD

I'm not voting, because I don't think it was ever an issue, and the two actors respect each other. And Jim was considered for the role.

I wouldn't want to cause division. A vote here proves nothing.

I think this began with a discussion between Grincy Steve of Belgium and me. Don't get me wrong, let the vote continue. I just think it would be better to join the discussion if you know something about it rather than to simply vote, because a lot of people haven't seen the 1971, may I repeat for emphasis, we're talking 1971 here ....version of the movie. A popularity contest it is not.

I like Count Olaf too. But it would have been strange to see him in the chocolate factory.

Hi, its me again. Just one little point- Johnny Depp already conceded that he could never fill Gene Wilder shoes!!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was Gene Wilder's life work, that is what he is known for. Depp has had plenty of credit for many roles. Don't undermine Gene Wilder.

thats an intreresting point. I guess it can be argue that Depp is the Wonka for this generation (and possibly next) while Wilder is the Wonka for people from the 90s and earlier.
