Heya folks, it's Mick, the dude who runs Being Charlie Kaufman. (There's a link to me on JCO, but it's been dead for a year, cos I relocated the site. Annnnnnyway...)

Little over a week ago I received an email from Kristian, ESOTSM's Extras Casting Associate. She offered to answer any questions I had. Like a dumbass, I barely knew what to ask, but managed to send her a note. Here be her reply:

I worked directly with the Assistant Directors and would be on set quite a bit.

I was there for all the Montauk shooting sequences which included all the beach sequences and the train stuff that takes place early in the film..

We had used quite a bit of local (Hampton) people for the extras when we were shooting up there. Everyday the 2nd Asst. Director and I would discuss what sort of background extras they wanted for the scene that shot the next day..
Michel was a great director and interesting man. Everything he did was unorthodox. There were days where he would shoot film without letting the actors know.. he would just shot random footage. He just had the ability to really take advantage of the strange script and run with it.
There was a day when Michel had found out that New York, once a year when the carnival was in town, was forced to walk the Elephants down 34th st instead of being able to transfer them in cages. So when they were done shooting for the day, he ran over to 34th st. and shot a dream sequence of Jim and Kate chasing the elephants.. it was completely unplanned.

He was absolutely brilliant.

I didn't see Charlie much on set but I wasn't there every day and when I was it was just for a few hours in the early morning.

I know Jim was very cool and was very friendly to everyone. At the wrap party he was dancing all night and dancing with everyone.

I can write more on Friday, after I see it.
I am very excited about it myself.

Today I received her mini-review:

I saw the film on Thursday. I absolutely loved it. The visuals were amazing. and they stayed very true to the shooting script.

The first ten or 15 minutes have a completely different tone and timing then the rest of the film and that threw me off but then I realized what he was doing..
very smart.

Let me know if there is anything you are interested in hearing about.
By the way, the shooting script is very different from the version of the script you have.

(FYI: I had asked for a totally honest opinion... I offered to leave any major negative comments off my site - didn't want her to lose her job, but I wanted a genuine opinion on the film. Luckily she seems to've enjoyed it.)

Annnnnyway, if any of you folks have questions for her, feel free to email me: michael@beingcharliekaufman.com and if the questions aren't completely insane, I'll pass some along to her. She seems very cool.

-Mick.

Edited by: clydebruckman23 at: 3/9/04 2:38 am

Hey everyone, i just got back from seeing ESOTSM. it was really good, i liked this version better than the original script by kaufman. gondrys directing is really natural looking and the memory sequences are beautiful. if youve seen any of his music videos before, you can definitely tell his style. Jim, of course, was amazing. i really love the character of joel. Jim makes him much more likeable than i think he is in the script. and clemetine (kate's character) is a LOT more likeable, a lot of her bratty characteristics are downplayed. all in all, i absolutely loved the movie. it spoke to me, not only as a Jim Carrey fan, but as a someone who has loved and lost and loved again... just a beautiful story beautifully told.
