Jim Carrey discussion on non-movie related topics or topics which doesn't fit anywhere else...
by Robg1077 » Fri Nov 11, 2005 11:27 am
Hello guys,
I need your help!
I'm at college and doing an auteur(character) study on Jim Carrey, and hopefully you guys can bt a part of it?
I've been researching three of his films, and looking on the web at interviews, articles and pictures all about Jim Carrey.
However, I think I need you guys, the most die hard fans to help me!
Ok my question is, How does Jim Carreys movement & facial expressions add to his unique comedic style?
So i'd like your opinions on how his movement and facial expressions add to his unique comedic style in the films : Ace Ventura:Pet Detective, Liar Liar and Dumb And Dumber.
What are your views on Jim Carrey, and why do you like him so much? Preferably answering in context to the question of his movement and facial expressions.
I really need you guys!
Thanks in advance.
Rob

Well, if it's an Auteur study it's gonna be about how he makes a part his own and develops it his way..........
Auteurs are pioneers .......they take risks, they ain't afraid to fall flat on their faces..............
but by that definition they are also inclined to be dictorial......and single minded............
If it's about Jim Carrey the 'Auteur'...............i would go for Ace Ventura..........as he re-wrote it for himself..............
i would also go for Man on the Moon and talk about his method acting.......and how he became Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton for real..............
and Dumb and Dumber is a good choice because it's quintessentially Jimmy.......
But remember to discuss how he has developed into a serious actor.......it's not just about comedy any more.......a paragraph developing the change in him is a good idea..........
good luck.........

This reminds me of the part in "The Mask" when Ben Stein is telling him it's a METAPHOR. Not a literal mask, but a facade you take up to avoid showing others your real self...
...and everybody's got one.
Jim Carrey is skilled at creating that mask.

For me his facial expressions (especially in Ace) add to the originality of the film, because no one has ever done that kind of acting before. (not even Steve Martin!) His face is completely unique he can do things with it that not many other people can. (note: his voice is just as elastic as his face.)
I like Jim because I can completely mute his movies and still laugh at the funny parts, because of his physical style of comedy. It's completely original, and belong solely to Jim Carrey, and I would hate any actor who tries to replicate it. IT"S Jim'S. So I hope this helps. good luck with your report!

um................but you are making it very hard for yourself if you restrict it to physical gestures etc..............how are you gonna write about those?
No..........you need to look at the whole picture..................sell Jim to the reader as a unique, interesting and awesome talent who has the amazing ability to appeal to everyone.......plus he is always evolving......
lol......like bacteria........lol.........he has grown and spread.........lol...

Jim's style to me is like a living animated character...he can make his facial expressions and body movements in a way that an animated drawing can...he exentuates the extremes just as is done in the animation stretch and squash theory. He like a cartoon in the flesh....only cartoons don't do the same thing for me as Jim does.
