Stalking?

Postby Bassy95 » Mon Jul 14, 2003 8:09 pm

I was watching a special on the E! Channel called The High Price of Fame – Stalked and started thinking about something. How do you find the very thin line between stalking and being a big fan? According to the experts that they interviewed, it is someone who is very much taken with the artist, watches their performances repeatedly, and wants to be somehow connected to their life. It isn’t always that there has to be a desire to murder or harm. I have read a lot postings (on this board) that could qualify to that about Jim’s girlfriend and personal life, etc. So does that mean we are all stalkers to a certain extent? Isn’t that what these message boards are for….to post any information regarding everything having to do with that person?

I am working on a book for charity and dealing with celebrities, so how can I be sure that they don't think that I am stalking? Sorry I am just a little freaked I guess.

No you´re right.. what we´re doing here is somehow stalking.. BUT! Most of us do it in a healthy way.. you know?... We admirer one of the greatest (plus best looking ) actor in the world.. We are interested in his life.. and filming projects.. Sure we´d like to meet him.. I´d give ..dunno.. whatever just to talk to him .. to get to know him better.. (or ..to get to know him at all )

Unfortunately there are some girls who crossed that line.. Don´t want to name them ..we all know!
I really think they need help.. or.. a break..

I can´t understand why on the one hand Threads like the one about Betina Holte are closed...and on the other hand some statements by JCO Members are left without any commentary by the "Kings of Board" .. (Dunno how to call em ..sorry..no offense).

I love this board.. and the people here (at least ..most of them.. you can´t love everybody.. you know.. hm)
but .. some things shouldn´t happen.. things like stalking.. even though it´s only written...

(Hope you understand what I mean)

I would only class myself as a stalker if I was hanging around outside Jim's house, or driving by it every day. Also, if I followed him around to restaurants and stuff. Hung around outside the studios. Stuff like that.
So far the closest I've got to being near him was Leicester Square 2 weeks after Bruce Almighty got here. *lol* Bit late. lol
I can't do it. I have an appointment. Urm... dentist... yeah!

Has anyone seen that show on E! "Celebrities Uncensored:. Charlie Sheen went up to one of the paparazzi once and said, "Do you know the difference between the paparazzi and a stalker? The paparrazzi have a camera." Its fun to see how the stars fight back at this invasion of their privacy by the nosy paparazzi.

Stalking...

Postby thecablegal » Wed Jul 16, 2003 10:05 pm

I don't think we are stalking! I'd like to meet Jim, does that mean I'm a stalker?
I met a celebrity that I am a big fan of back in April, and I was really excited, but that just means I'm normal doesn't it? Surely?!?! I mean, it is cos you see them on TV or in films, and when you see them face to face, it is great! And watching re-runs of films, TV shows, interviews, e.t.c, is NOT stalking! You are in no way harming the person involved. I have been watching Jim's films back for about the last 2 weeks, and stuff, but that is cos I haven't watched them for so long and could do with a laugh! I watched Ace Ventura: Pet Detective almost everyday when I was little, and now that i may be considered a stalker, it has freaked me out slightly! I am just a big fan, and I agree with what other people have said. I'm not holding a gun to his head and demanding that I have his autograph, I'm just watching the TV! Anyone agree with what I'm saying? I could really do with some more back up here, that has really, really made me feel like I am doing something wrong!!!

It kinda makes it sound like there shouldn't be fans of celebrities doesn't it?

"It's better to go after something special and risk starving to death than to surrender, if you give up your dreams, what's left?"

I think that real stalkers are people who really try to get into the life of an actor or star and try to ruin it on every way. Thats not good. Think of that stalker of John Lennon, who really killed him, or the stalker of Kate bush, who drives her crazy.
I think we are just greatfans of Jim, who like his art, and ofcourse we like to meet him one day, but that because we just adore him. Thats just fandom.
I think you know for yourself if you're thoughts going to far...

Word up, peeps! Everybody chill for a second.

The word 'Stalker', comes from the verb, 'to stalk', this in turn was first used when refering to a hunter stalking prey. In the same way, this is metaphorically describes the psychologically impact and behaviour of what a 'Stalker' would be doing, closing in on their prey, ready for some kind of psycholigical 'kill', as it were. This is often the reason stalkers are connected with being individuals, who, through their obsession with a person end up killing them.

That's what stalking is a psychological state between hunter and hunted. Do I believe anybody on this board has the same psychological intent as a true stalker? No. They really aren't that common. Don't ever confuse obsession with that. None of you should feel that because a T.V. programme with biased about the behaviour of certain fans should reflect negatively on any of you. Programmes like that, are there to discourage 'lurker behaviour' and explore the psychology of a stalker.

None of us here camp out on the guy's lawn, or follow him constantly, or break into his house to touch any of his possesions.

It is true that stalkers will as some other's in this post have already stated, try to find a kinship with the individual they have become fixated with, psychologically they may already believe that their subject is sending them messages, signs if you like, for them to proceed to force themselves as a focal point in their life. Usually by this point a stalker will be in a state of obsession with an individual so intense that they may beileve that they have had conversations with them. Their is a psychatric term for this but it's slipped my mind.

Don't think that by watching a film of Jim's or wanting to meet him/ get his pic/autograph whatever, that makes you a stalker.

Fangz, ahh, I could go on but I think I've said enough.

I liked Fangz' thing about it, and ur right, we don't hold a knife to his throat, and I certainly don't wanna kill him, then he wouldn't be there to enjoy would he? I think ppl like that are just nutters. Stalkers are usually extremely obsessed fans, but killing the person means they are gone... I don't get that! Anyway, itz late! Better go!

Stalkers are individuals who disrupt a person's privacy or mean them harm.
WE ARE NOT STALKERS!!!! We are just good people who have a healthy interest in a celebrity. We definately do not disrupt his privacy and do not mean him harm. We just admire the guy-which is PERFECTLY NORMAL human behavior.
The definition from the E! channel, as stated originally, was wrong.

The thing about a fan's love is not the quantity, it's the quality......

You can love someone VERY, VERY much, but if this drives you to stalking, it's not worth anything!

But if you add respect to that love, nobody can beat that!

I don't think this needs more explanation!
A n d r e a
