Carrey on 'Snicket' Ticket

Postby TNPihl » Thu Sep 19, 2002 7:43 pm

NEW YORK (Variety) - Jim Carrey is in talks to star in the Barry Sonnenfeld-directed "Lemony Snicket," which Paramount Pictures hopes will be its ticket to a Harry Potteresque franchise.

The picture, which the studio is developing with Nickelodeon Films, is an adaptation of the Daniel Handler children's book series "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events."

The wildly popular Snicket series has grown to eight books since Handler hatched the series in 1999. The saga revolves around a trio of orphans who are passed around to a series of quirky people. The first of those is the mysterious Count Olaf, who is counting on separating the children from their inheritance.

The series has the kind of kid-appropriate edge evident in J.K. Rowling ( news - web sites)'s "Potter" series, and that prompted the studio to bring in both producer Scott Rudin and Sonnenfeld, who showed a flair for black comedy in the Rudin-produced "The Addams Family" and its sequel. The script has been written by Handler. Rudin and Carrey previously collaborated on "The Truman Show."

Sources said that Carrey has sparked to the Count role, and the talks going on right now are aimed at sorting out Carrey's busy dance card. He's filming the Tom Shadyac-directed comedy "Bruce Almighty" at Universal with Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman, and Carrey expects to start work early next year on "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a Focus-based film written by "Being John Malkovich" scribe Charlie Kaufman.

"Snicket" would likely follow that film. Carrey is also poised to play Howard Hughes in a Castle Rock-based film that is being scripted and will be directed by "Insomnia" helmer Chris Nolan.
// TNPihl

Visit The Jim Carrey Net:

I recently caught a glimpse of the covers for the Lemony Snicket series. Two words immediately popped into my head: "Harry Potter." I mean, one of the main characters has black hair and circular-framed eyeglasses! All he needs is a lightning bolt scar on his forehead and -- boom -- we get Harry Potter's long lost cousin.

*TaKe KaRe NoW |

| BuH ~ BYe THeN*

December 1 ?!?

That's seems awfully soon for a film with no other cast members (or a director) announced yet.

Besides, I thought Eternal Sunshine seemed pretty set to start in January.

Good point, although, the Count Olaf thing could be just a small part, like in "Simon Birch". They shot Jim's SB appearance in 1 or 2 days. Just a thought...

Carrey ON!
BCDavis
<table style=="filter:glow(color=green, strength=7);font-family:arial;font-weight: BOLD;font-size:'10pt'" allign=center>

"Funny the things you remember, not so funny the things you forget..."

Actually, Count Olaf is one of the main characters of the series of books called "A Series Of Unfortunate Events," by Lemony Snicket. He is after the fortune of 3 orphans, therefore is the villian. So, Count Olaf has a major part. Jim Carrey is gonna have lots do do with this movie.

By the way, the guy with the glasses on the cover of ASOUE, is an orphan named Klaus, not Harry Potter. I've read the series (ASOUE), and there are absolutely no descriptions of that particular character.

The director of this movie WAS Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black). But he quit, and if someone replaces him, he's officially out. The producer WAS Scott Rudin, but he quit after problems with the budget.

As for the cast, Joan Cusack may be playing Justice Strauss, and Johnny Depp will be playing Lemony Snicket. There was one more actress who was playing Aunt Josephine but I forgot her...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">
For the 3 Baudelaire orphans, they are holding auditions in some places in Canada and there was one in New York, a while ago.

With all due respect,
Orangey Snicket
*~*~*~*~*~*"Bngan maanpii kiing." Yes, don't view these books as a ripoff of "Harry Potte

Postby Artchick » Sun Feb 23, 2003 10:56 pm

They are really outstanding in their own very unique way and deserve to be recognized as something distinctly separate from "Potter." There is more than enough room for both.

Apart from a sham sideshow psychic in the ninth book, the "ASOUE" books have absolutely nothing to do with magic. The orphans have to rely on their wits, their individual gifts, and the profound self absorption and stupidity of the adults to make it through each twisted book.

They are highly entertaining reads!
